In all the languages that I know, I never had any issues with verbs and French is no exception. There are a few rules that do differ from English and may not be easily acceptable to your logical mind but overall its simple. The Verb 'Be' - Le Verbe Etre

Etre Verbs are verbs used in place of 'Be' as in English. So they are used in place of verbs like - am, are, was, were, is etc. Another definition is:

Verbs describing, motion and direction; and reflexive verbs for example "to wash my hair", are conjugated with the verb "être" (to be)

Verb to be : être, present

Je Suis I am
Tu es You are
il est He/It is
elle est She/It is
vous_etes You are
nous sommes We are
Ils sont They are
Elles sont They are

 

Verb to be : être, imperfect

J'étais I was
Tu étais You were
Il était He was
Elle était She was
Nous étions We were
You were Vous étiez
They were Ils étaient

Verb to be : être, future

Je serai I will be
Tu seras You will be
Il sera He will be
Elle sera She will be
Nous serons We will be
Vous serez You will be
Ils seront They will be
