Paris, like New York City, is divided into large districts. Though smaller and more numerous than New York’s boroughs, the arrondissements of Paris are large enough to comprise many neighborhoods. There are twenty arrondissements of Paris, numbered first through twentieth.

Le premier, or the first, is right at the heart of the city. Le Lourvre and le Palais Royale are in this district. From there, the numbers get higher and les arrondissements spiral out from the center of the city in a clockwise fashion.

A small book called Paris Arrondissements is sold at presses and tabacs all across the city.

It is, by far, the best and most compact map of the city you can buy,

and at under 10 euros, it’s a bargain.

Best of all, many parisiens use the book, so you don’t have to feel like such a tourist when you pull it out to find your way.

The Paris Arrondissements book is terrifically helpful if you’re lost and can’t find a friendly Parisian to help you.

It includes a street guide that allows you to look up the street you are standing on (listed under RUES), find the page by arrondissement (abbreviated as AR.), and find your exact location using a alphanumeric grid (listed under PLAN).

So, if you’re lost and standing on rue de l’Abbaye, you’ll find this listing:

You can then turn to the page showing the 6e arrondissement and look for the box at the intersection of T and 13.This lesson is about interpreting maps in French, especially those found in the book mentioned above.

*Une presse is really much more than a newspaper stand, and these days, un tabac sells more than just cigarettes. In fact, there is a great deal of overlap between the two—un tabac sells nearly everything une presse does (news, magazines, stationary, maps), plus tobacco products.
